I have always loved baking cakes and for the past few years I have made and decorated cakes for special family occasions, which have been well received. I started with a cake for my Mum’s wedding in 2005. I had to stack 3 Madeira cakes to make a tall tower, cover it in sugarpaste and paint the panels. I guess it wasn’t too bad for a first attempt but I didn’t really know what I was doing and the sugarpaste was very difficult to deal with!
My next attempt was an engagement cake for my sister. I had to stack the cakes again and decided not to aim for a smooth sugarpaste finish (as the previous attempt wasn’t so successful!) so I coloured different strips and draped them over the cake. I was really pleased with how this one turned out.
I have recently switched my focus to cupcakes and have been experimenting with combinations of sugarpaste and buttercream. I made some cupcakes for my Mum for Mother’s Day and presented them in a pretty box. They were vanilla sponge topped with lilac sugarpaste, a buttercream swirl and matching lilac flower.
It is my dream to set up my own business making, decorating and selling cakes and cupcakes for all occasions, maybe even have my own little cupcake shop (well, I can dream!) 🙂
I have just had my place confirmed on a Cake Artistry course at Eastleigh College, starting April 20th. I’m really looking forward to learning how I should be doing all the things I’ve taught myself, and maybe I’ll be able to cover a cake without any lumps and bumps!
