Ever since my best friend announced her engagement, I was really excited about her big day. I was especially looking forward to it because she gave me some very creative and fun, although slightly nerve-wracking, jobs to do!

I love handmade touches to weddings, it makes it so personal and you can tailor the theme exactly to what you what, so I was thrilled that she asked me to help her design and make the stationery. The bridesmaids wore navy blue so we decided to go for a simple, classic style, with a hint of navy. The invitation slipped into a specially made ‘envelope’, with a ribbon detail and heart slider on the front. We also made the place cards and table menus to match. I think they looked pretty stylish – even if I do say so myself!

I’m sure it won’t come as any surprise to you that she also asked me to make the wedding cake. Chocolate was very much the theme for this – white chocolate in particular. We decided against the traditional stacked cakes and went for 3 cakes set out on a stand. The bottom tier was a rich, dark chocolate cake, the middle one was lemon and the top tier was white chocolate.

I covered the sides of each cake with white chocolate cigarellos and filled the tops with chocolate truffles, some of which I wrapped in blue foil to tie in with the colour theme. It was a really fun and different cake to make, and not a style I had tried before. The worst thing was the nerves – I get very worried about making cakes for weddings that I’m attending! There was no need though – everyone was very complimentary.

The last thing I helped with was the table centres. My friend couldn’t decide what she wanted and was just going to opt for some flowers in vases. However, I suggested something a bit different as a talking point and she let me loose with polystyrene balls, mini cupcakes, cocktail sticks and vases to create some cupcake bouquets.

These were a huge hit and were definitely a talking point. I spent most of my evening explaining to people how I made them! I think I soon became known as ‘The Cake Lady’! My friend and her family were really pleased with them too.

All in all, it was a wonderful wedding and we had a brilliant time. My friend looked amazing, the food was great, the venue was perfect and my friend’s new husband looked like the happiest man on earth.

Nicky and Anthony – lots of love and happiness to you both and thank you for letting me be a part of your special day, xx.
